Care for Balance Is the Future

I’m very happy to talk about this belief for mainly two reasons it is a new dimension in Bolton’s culture and it is the one that most has to do with sustainability. It is made by two extremely important words: Care and Balance. To take care and being able to find a balance is key in sustainability.
Care is a concept we, in Bolton, know very well, it is part of our DNA it refers to the act of protecting, having responsibility for something, looking over your loved ones.
Balance is a new entry for us. Yet, I believe it will be the most important concept for the upcoming years. Big challenges lie ahead of us and we need to be able to find the correct equilibrium among them to continue our path. Balance is about keeping together things that seem to be one against the other. It is about being able to manage trade off. It is about converge rather than diverge in everything we do. Is not about «or…or», but is about «and…and» There are three keywords which represent three key behaviors:
- Mutuality: we are part of a bigger ecosystem, we are all interdependent and interconnected, there is no room for loners. We need to take into consideration the interests of all the involved parts. Mutuality is about creating value together with our stakeholders, not only value for ourselves. That’s why we need to have a long-term mutual approach and not a short-term selfish one. Inclusivity: we need to have an inclusive culture, accounting for diversity and differences. We need to be open-minded, be curious! How many times has our founder told us «be curious» To stay in the tuna business, we need, by definition, to be inclusive as our supply chain is really global, involving many players and countries, developed and developing.
- Trust: a historic pillar in Bolton’s culture. When there is Trust, there is no need to have control and procedures, we can be faster, more agile, flexible. There was a magic question our founder used to make: «What do you need to do this?» The amount of trust that lies behind this question is astonishing. And being asked a question like this, it’s an incredible act of trust and a booster of motivation.
